History
The Three Sisters was reclaimed from three coal mining spoil tips and an old golf course during the 1970s and now consists of a large area of woodlands and ponds. It has become a flagship example of brown-fields regeneration in greater manchester. The spoils were created by the three shafts of Garswood Hall Colliery in which three spoil heaps were created hence the name "The Three Sisters". Each spoil heap was over 150ft high and contained millions of tons of coal spoil. Since 1970 work has been going on to transform this eyesore into an amenity area. The large spoil heaps have been flattened so that today, it proves an area of 15 acres which includes lakes and farmland. Its varied use also includes an area devoted to industry.
This is a new map next to an od map of where the three sisters is. Having these two maps side by side allows you to see the drastic change from the collories to the three sisters we see today.
