Minor White
Minor white was an American photographer who died aged 67 in 1976. He is mostly known for his black and white photographs of landscapes, people and abstract subject matter. He combined an interest in how people viewed and understood photographs with a personal vision that was guided by a variety of spiritual and intellectual philosophies.
This is a piece of Minor White’s work which has inspired me in this photoshoot. The photo is of old decaying wood in the middle of some trees. The image itself doesn’t represent something on its own but is mostly left to the viewer’s choice. To me it gives the sense of the land being destroyed because of how broken and decayed the rust looks. The image is black and white which gives it the appearance of an older images because of the slight grain in the image. However, there is still a high contrast in the image as the background appears a lot darker than the wood at the front. This dark background really enhances the wood almost creating a negative space around it.
The photo would have been taken on an older camera because of the time in which the photographer was alive (before 1970’s). it wouldn’t have had any digital enhancements added to it. He would have used a high contrast film and he may of used some dodging and burning to get certain areas lighter or darker.
This image gives me quite a sad mood because of what it could represent to me. It may represent the destruction of the land and therefore its quite a negative image. The black and white definitely adds to this mood because it lacks colour and vibrancy giving it a duller look. The composition makes the image draw your attention straight to the decaying wood, focusing your mind on how the land is being destroyed.
