Fay Godwin
Fay Godwin was a landscape photographer who was well known for her black-and-white countryside photography. She took photos of the landscape which had clear man made elements in them. Most of her photos where in isolated and remote areas or the British landscape.
This is one of her more famous pieces of work. It is a black and white landscape photo of the countryside. It is taken from a higher point and is looking down on the landscape. She takes the photo so that at least 1/3 of the image is sky and the rest is land. The first thing you notice in the image is the path, this draws your attention and leads you out into the rest of the image. In the left side of the image everything appears quite close but as you move further to the left the image distances out. Fay Godwin started taking photos because of her love of walking. Therefore I feel that she took this photo just by chance of walking to that area rather than planning exactly where she was going to take the photo. Her work is all created on Black and White film which gives it the high contrast in the image.
This work makes me feel quite calm. The image appears very still and gives the impression it is a quiet place. This gives me the impression that this is a remote area where not a lot of people visit and therefore hasn’t been affected much by humans. The only damage done to the landscape is a pathway and some land being used for farming. The image is black and white so therefore gives it a moodier look compared to if it was in colour. If the image was in colour it would appear happier because of how vibrant it would be. The composition does affect this image because if it was taken form a different angle it would have the same feel as all you would have the effect of it slowly going outwards the more right you go in the image. This gives the feel that the more land we can see the more we can see the damage we are doing to it.
I think the Fay Godwin is trying to portray the idea that we are slowly destroying nature. Even though the countryside still appears beautiful at first glance actually it is being destroyed slowly by humans. This work was made for anyone as I feel it’s almost a message to humans that we need to stop destroying the landscape before the only beautiful places we have left get destroyed.

For my development I have removed mad made objects from the land. This represents the idea of nature taking back the land that humans have stolen. Removing the man-made objects shows how much more beautiful the land is when its untouched by man.
